Does street photography have to be black and white?

The eye will automatically be drawn to the human shape. B&W often works best when photographing silhouettes. There are also some strategic reasons to favor black and white over color. As street photographers we usually do not remove elements from the frame in post-processing.

Why do street photographers shoot in black and white?

Often times it is more interesting for the viewer when not everything is revealed, but there is still room for imagination. This kind of image works very well in B&W. Increasing the contrast also adds to this effect. Colors often would be too distracting and take away from the mysterious atmosphere.

Why are black and white photos timeless?

Black and white photography can be considered timeless for a few reasons. One of those is that shooting without color makes us appreciate the process of photography even more. Images shot in monochrome have that appeal to them that color sometimes can’t compare to. The images you shoot in b&w has more mystery.

What should you do when taking a black and white photography?

Whether you’re shooting black and white portrait photography or black and white landscape photography, remember the following:

  1. Look for images that provide high contrast.
  2. Use texture as another way to express contrast.
  3. Monitor light sources in street photography.
  4. Use a small aperture and as low an ISO as possible.

Are black and white photos better?

Images that prioritize shape and pattern are often better in black and white because you then easily eliminate the distraction of colour. Photographers can also manipulate a black and white image to draw a pattern out even more—like when the repeating objects aren’t exactly the same colour.
