Does PSLE score matter?

Commentary: PSLE scores could impact life outcomes. So don’t let them. Where PSLE scores have been a high-stakes milestone for years, the shift towards subject-based banding (SBB) will change that. But SBB also has room for improvement in achieving this aim, says Kelvin Seah Kah Cheng.

Is Psle stressful?

A survey by Singapore-based research agency Blackbox Research last month found that, while over 70 per cent of Singaporeans found the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) to be “meritocratic and fair”, more than three-quarters of them found the exams too stressful for both students and parents.

How important is PSLE?

The PSLE allows students to gauge their academic aptitude and make a wise choice in their application for a secondary school education. It is also a test of a child’s resilience and stress management skills which are extremely important in preparing them to be ready for the real world.

The PSLE score is important to your child, as it determines whether your child can move on to Secondary School. Currently, students who fail the PSLE have 2 options: to retake the PSLE a year later or to advance to a vocational school.

As PSLE approaches, do encourage your child to do their best, instead of unloading your expectations upon them. Acknowledge their efforts when they are trying their best to perform better. By reassuring your child, it is a great form of emotional support and it empowers them to do better.

What is T score in Singapore?

The subject T-score shows how well the student performed relative to their peers in a particular subject. The 4 subject T-scores are added to form the T-score Aggregate, which shows how well they did compared to everyone else who sat for the PSLE in the same year.

What is the lowest score for PSLE?

The PSLE Score will range from 4 (best) to 32. The score will be used when you choose a secondary school and also students will continue to be assigned to Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) courses, until 2023.

Is pencil allowed in PSLE?

Markers do mark answers written in pencil. However, if your child really hates the pen, do make sure you bring at least a few HB or 2B pencils. They are dark enough and can be used for OAS shading. Only 0.5 ink is allowed during exam as 0.7 ink pens smudge easily and the working becomes untidy.

First and foremost, you should reassure your child that you love them, and not blame them for their results. Some parents may resort to caning and physical punishment if their child doesn’t do well, but the finality of the PSLE results is much higher than that of their previous primary school exams.

Can I appeal my child’s PSLE score?

There are avenues to appeal, but it’s unlikely that a child’s PSLE score would be modified except in very extenuating circumstances. Your child already feels bad for not doing as well as expected, so don’t make them feel any worse.

Is PSLE a change for the sake of changing?

PSLE, as part of the meritocracy of Singapore, is intrinsically competitive and no one should deny that. To me, it seems to be a change for the sake of changing. Maybe the government need to show that they care about the stress our children are having. It is about how we think of the competition, and how we handle it.

How much does a PSLE T-score really matter?

Whether or not it’s fair to base six years of education on the results of a single exam is a debate for another time. However, a child’s PSLE T-score directly affects what secondary school they are eligible for, which is where they will be spending another four to five years of their education.
