Do the Great Lakes look like the ocean?

The Great Lakes today hold an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of water — a fifth, or 20\%, of all the drinkable water on the surface of Earth. These lakes not only look like oceans, they often seem to behave like oceans.

Does lake Erie look like an ocean?

Yes, they can look just like the ocean, especially during storms, when you can easily get 50 foot or more waves. And many people would be surprised to see what huge ships navigate on the great lakes…

Why is Lake Michigan a lake not a sea?

This is not ocean. These lakes, though, like the oceans but unlike most other lakes, have no outflow. In the Great Lakes, a water molecule and its salts do not stay put for long—only about 200 years— before traveling from lake to lake and then through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic.

Does Lake Superior completely freeze over?

Ok, but does Lake Superior ever completely freeze over? Again, the answer is yes, but rarely. According to the NOAA, the long-term average annual maximum ice coverage on Lake Superior is 61.5\%, meaning that in a typical winter, the most ice coverage Lake Superior will see at one time is 61.5\%.

Are the Great Lakes similar to the Atlantic Ocean?

The answer is no. Atlantic and other oceans I suppose are much more energetic than the Great Lakes. No matter when you visit Atlantic the oceanic waves are always present. Great Lakes can be and are actually quite calm most of the time. Also the smell is clearly different. Ocean smells salty. The Lakes smell of fresh water.

What is the difference between a lake and an ocean shore?

One difference I haven’t seen mentioned is tides, which are much weaker on the lakes (on the other hand, water level is more changeable between years). For most people, though, the distinction between a Great Lake shore and an Ocean shore is smaller than the difference between some shores of the same body.

How do people travel between the Great Lakes?

Water in the Great Lakes flows from Lake Superior, into Lake Huron, into Lake Michigan, into Lake Erie, into Lake Ontario, and into the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. There are about 35,000 islands in the Great Lakes, many of which are inhabited. People travel between the island and the mainland by ferries, boats and bridges.

Can You sense the ocean in the Great Lakes?

There is a general loudness and foaminess of the ocean that the Great Lakes (inland seas, actually) don’t match. You can sense the deep, powerful rumble of the ocean Kind of. Most of the time, if you’re standing on the beach or shore, it looks “endless”. They are all large enough to occupy the entire horizon much the way that the ocean does.
