Can you use a rapier in fencing?

Modern fencing is more of an offshoot of 17th and 18th Century smallsword fencing than that of rapier. Although many of the attacks and defenses are similar, I would venture to say that these modern techniques would be very dangerous to the user if employed with an actual rapier in rapier combat.

Is a rapier a foil?

Rapier and even longsword foils are also known to have been used, but their weight and use were very different. The foil was used in France as a training weapon in the middle of the 18th century in order to practice fast and elegant thrust fencing.

Rapiers were well suited to unarmored street-fighting and private duelling. They were simply more adept at the newer style of foyning fence than the wider, flatter kind of blades, which by the late 1500s were declining in general military use. But thrusting was hardly a new thing in the 1500s.

The Foil. The foil is a thrusting weapon only. Fencers can only score a hit by striking the point of their weapon on the defined target area of their opponent, which is limited to the torso only. Non-valid hits also stop the bout, but are not counted.

Are rapiers good for combat?

But as long as everyone is obsessed with this one-upmanship of comparing one blade to another, it’s worth pointing out that rapiers really are the best choice in single combat if the objective is to simply beat the other fighter, not kill them.

Are rapiers better than swords?

As a longsword is used in two hands, the weight difference is irrelevant. A rapier is not automatically faster than a longsword, though it tends to be faster in the thrust. However, the longsword is very good at using the leverage advantage to parry and then counter from the bind, for which a rapier is poor.

So basically, if you want to enjoy the modern or classic sport of fencing, then go and enjoy the sport wholeheartedly. If you are serious about learning how to use the rapier, practice and learn how to use the rapier or at least a proper reproduction of one.

Altering the rules you fence under is one, but changing the weapon itself has more of an effect. Remember that epees are specifically designed for epee fencing and are not the original rapiers. Epees promote a number of inappropriate actions which the real rapiers cannot really execute.

Is raprapier fighting accurate?

Rapier fighting cannot just be accurately practiced or understood simply by including a couple of historical stances and theatrical poses or moves to the contemporary sport of fencing. Altering the rules you fence under is one, but changing the weapon itself has more of an effect.
