Can soldiers bring home enemy weapons?
Although it’s tempting to bring back reminders of service in a military campaign, with few exceptions, taking or retaining individual souvenirs or trophies is prohibited. War trophies, defined as enemy weapons, ammunition, explosives or items of equipment, are non-mailable.
Do soldiers pick their weapons?
Soldiers operate weapon systems. They are not allowed to pick and customise the weapon systems that make them feel good about being soldiers. They carry the weapon system that their unit wants to have in place and ready to be operated. The soldier is there to serve their weapon, not vice versa.

This game doesn’t allow you to pick up a fallen comrade’s firearm either. This is a balanced change because both sides would have the same ability to pick up the other’s weapons. Picking up downed enemy and friendly weapons is not only realistic but common in real warfare, and that includes professional armies.

In the US military it’s generally not a big deal if you want to bring your own stuff but it varies by unit and by the item in question. Privately-owned weapons are generally a no-no but plenty of people have bought their own optics or other accessories to modify their issued weapons.

Why was the trench gun inhumane?
Without the heat shield, the barrel could get too hot to hold when using the bayonet. With one “in the spout” (chambered) and five in its tubular magazine, the Trench Gun could hold six shotgun shells. Normal cartridges made of a brass base with a cardboard tube were unfit for the terrible conditions at the front.
