Can I name my son after his grandfather?

Your first son’s name is fine. However, it’s not proper to name your 2nd son after his great-grandfather & call him Hubert George Turner, Jr. He wouldn’t be a “junior”. He should be named Hubert George Turner II.

Are you a junior If you have the same name as your grandfather?

In my experience, the use of the term II generally indicates a son who has been named after a family member other than their father, such as a grandfather or an uncle. The Junior must be a son of the father, not a grandson. The names must be exactly the same, including the middle name.

There’s no “on a break” of suffix-naming: it’s the firstborn son of each name-holder, and there is no skipping.

Do you have to have the same middle name to be a third?

No. The suffixes “Sr”, “Jr”, “II”, “III”, etc are only used when you have people with EXACTLY the same name. The purpose is to distinguish one relative from another. If you have a different middle name, then that is how you are distinguished.

But, there is a bit of confusion in naming the second in line as it is possible to use II (the second) and JR (Junior). Although these things are not set in stone, there are common rules in whether you should use II or JR in naming a child. JR is to be used when the child is going to have the same name as his father.

Where do you put the third when last name is first?

When used in this context, the abbreviation is capitalized and a period follows it. If the name is written last name first, it should follow this pattern: Last Name, First Name Middle Initial., Suffix. For example, “Williams, Mark A., III.”

That common usage is to use Jr when the child is being named directly after his father and to use II when the child is to have the name of an earlier male relative, such as a grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, great-grandfather, etc. It is also usually expected that a father still is alive if a child is called Jr.
