Can I directly learn fingerstyle guitar?

There really is no absolute in terms of whether to learn fingerstyle or pick style first. However, if you are a beginner, at first, you will need to spend most of your time developing your left hand by playing chords and single note melodies. The right hand can then be more fully developed later.

Is fingerstyle guitar easy?

It is a difficult style to learn, but one way that you can increase your ability to play more is to work on muscle memory in the picking hand. Your fretting hand will pick it up pretty quickly to learn all the chords, but you need to make sure the picking hand isn’t being left behind.

No, it is much more beneficial to start by learning to strum with a pick. Fingerpicking really should not be learned first, much less fingerstyle. The reasons are many. A lot of your attention will need to be placed on your right hand with fingerpicking.

  • How do you learn to finger pick a guitar?

    Assign your thumb to the open low E string. Then assign the index, middle and ring fingers to specific strings- index on G string, middle on B, and ring finger on high E. Place your thumb and fingers with your fingers curved, and fingertips resting lightly on the strings. Your wrist should be softly curved as well.

    Give yourself more time with the basics (7-8 months)

  • Take the time to learn theory and structure (don’t skip ahead)
