Can artillery shells be guided?
Existing guided artillery rounds, often using GPS, Inertial Measurement Systems and advanced seeker technology, have been effective in combat for years, giving ground attack commanders expanded attack options. A precision-guided 155m artillery round, called Excalibur, first emerged in warfare in 2007.
What is Excalibur artillery shell?
The M982 Excalibur (previously XM982) is a 155 mm extended range guided artillery shell developed during a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the United States Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC).
What is a Copperhead missile?
The M712 Copperhead is a 155 mm caliber cannon-launched guided projectile (CLGP). It is a fin-stabilized, terminally laser guided, explosive shell intended to engage hard point targets such as tanks, self-propelled howitzers or other high-value targets.
Is artillery guided?
Cannon-launched guided projectiles are precision-guided munitions launched by howitzers, mortars, tank guns, and naval guns. Cannon Launched Guided Projectiles commonly referred to by the abbreviation CLGP are intended to supplement and not supplant conventional rounds, providing additional accuracy when needed.
How do laser guided systems work?
Laser guidance directs a robotics system to a target position by means of a laser beam. The laser guidance of a robot is accomplished by projecting a laser light, image processing and communication to improve the accuracy of guidance. The guidance system may serve also as a mediator for cooperative multiple robots.
How accurate are laser guided missiles?
A laser-guided bomb (LGB) is a guided bomb that uses semi-active laser guidance to strike a designated target with greater accuracy than an unguided bomb. Unguided bombs had an accuracy rate of just 5.5\% per mission, which usually included large numbers of the munitions.

The Laser designator produces that spot as either a ground or airborne unit. Therein lies part of the problem since this method of guidance was first deployed.
How does a laser shell work?
The shell has a special kind of seeker that can pick up on certain wavelengths of highly-concentrated light. While the shell is descending, the seeker picks up the laser. The shell uses fins to guide itself towards the target.
What happens if a laser is placed too early in flight?
If the Laser spot is placed on the target too early in the time of flight then it is possible that the beam will be detected and either evacuated (a building) “Laser guided artillery shells” is actually a bit misleading as it implies that the shells use a Laser to guide them and that is not correct.
What is the difference between laser-guided and precision-guided bombs?
BOLT-117, the world’s first laser-guided bomb. A precision-guided munition (PGM, smart weapon, smart munition, smart bomb) is a guided munition intended to precisely hit a specific target, to minimize collateral damage and increase lethality against intended targets.
