Are trombone mouthpieces universal?

To the untrained eye, trombone mouthpieces all appear to be similar in size and serve the same function. As you or your child will come to learn, having an understanding of your trombone’s mouthpiece as well as your own needs and preferences will have a beneficial impact on your sound and playing style.

Are all trombone mouthpieces the same size?

The main trombone mouthpiece size differences are the rim width, cup depth, throat, and back bore. Many of us develop an expensive habit of trying out different mouthpieces to get an edge on tone quality or clarity of sound or to extend our range.

Are all brass mouthpieces the same?

Different mouthpieces will produce different qualities of tone when used with the same instrument. Lower instruments also have larger mouthpieces, to maximize resonance (see pitch of brass instruments). For example, trumpet and trombone mouthpieces are usually semi-spherical whereas French horn mouthpieces are conical.

What size mouthpiece should I get?

Generally, the larger mouthpiece is often played for lower registers, and the smaller mouthpiece is played for the higher registers. Then, deeper cup produces darker and milder tones while shallower cup produces more brilliant and clearer tones. Standard cup depth would be preferred for a flexible performance.

Are trombone and baritone mouthpieces the same?

No. Trombone mouthpieces are specifically designed to be used on trombones only. Likewise, this applies to euphonium and baritone mouthpieces. This is because the internal design of a trombone mouthpiece is different compared to that of a euphonium or a baritone mouthpiece.
