Are students studying abroad considered NRIs?

Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), students who go to other countries for the purpose of studying are treated as NRIs.

Is a student on F1 NRI?

As a student leaving India in August or September of the financial year, it is most likely that you will be an NRI for income tax purposes. In the US for instance, as a student on an F1 visa, you are considered to be a non-resident of the US for the first 5 calendar years that you are on this visa.
