Can you demote yourself in the military?

Yes I transfered from the AF reserve to Army reserve and took a voluntary demotion of one grade. I know several people over the years that did the same thing.

Can you ask for a demotion in the military?

It is the policy of the Department of General Services (DGS) that permanent or probationary employees are allowed the opportunity for voluntary demotion to a vacant position as long as the employee and management are in mutual agreement.

Can an army officer be decommissioned?

To retire as an officer, the service member must have served at least 10 years as a commissioned officer. However, the Secretary of Defense can authorize the Secretaries of each service to allow members with only 8 years of commissioned service to retire as an officer.

Who can demote?

Airmen can be demoted as follows:

  • Demote a Senior Airman or higher (E-4 and above) no lower than Airman First Class (E-3) (with exceptions);
  • Demote an Airman First Class (E-3) no lower than Airman (E-2); and.
  • Demote an Airman (E-2) to Airman Basic (E-1).

Who can demote a msgt?

AFI36-2502, Enlisted Airman Promotion/Demotion Programs, provides guidance and procedures on demoting enlisted Airmen. Under this instruction, a group commander, or equivalent level commander (e.g. senior Air Force officer in the grade of colonel), may demote MSgts and below.
