Why is it important to know the difference between equality and equity?

Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

Is equality or equity more fair?

Fair, to some people, means everyone getting the same thing. This is the definition of equality. However, equality can be perceived as fair only if everyone begins at the same place and needs the same things to succeed. Equity is free from the biases that occur with equality.

Equity, unlike equality, acknowledges different populations face different barriers to success and works to limit or eliminate these barriers. How do you illustrate the equality/equity difference in this graphic?

You might be familiar with a graphic that uses two pictures to illustrate the equality/equity difference. In the “equality” image, three people of different heights observe a sports game from behind a tall fence. They’re all equally positioned, but only the tallest person can see the game.

What is equity and why is it important?

In order to create true equality of opportunity, equity is needed to ensure that everyone has the same chance of getting there. However, we must be cautiously when dealing with equity; providing too little to those who need it and too much to those who do not can further exacerbate the inequalities we see today.
