Why does wet wool smell weird?

There is an odor associated with wet wool, sometimes described as a “wet dog”, “burned”, or “perm” smell. This particular smell of wet wool is present because we use natural merino wool that has been minimally processed in order to preserve the lanolin content inside the wool.

Does wool smell bad when wet?

Since wool comes from sheep fibers, sometimes wool rugs can take on an unpleasant smell when exposed to water or moisture. The odor is reminiscent of wet dog or barnyard animals, and when you’ve invested a bit of money into your wool rug, a smell like that can be alarming!

Hand washing wool is really quick and easy. Turn your wool garment inside out, then hand wash in clean, lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, using a mild and gentle detergent. Allow to soak for a period of 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly firstly in lukewarm water, then finally in cold water.
