Why does Australia produce so much wool?

This is as a result from better breeding and more sustainable grazing methods i.e. producing more from the same animals and land.

Is wool environmentally friendly?

Wool can be used for blankets as well as knitwear and even carpeting. Lot’s of alternative natural fabrics don’t provide as much warmth as wool. Wool is eco-friendly. It’s a natural, renewable resource and the manufacturing process causes little to no harm to the environment.

Why did the wool industry start?

The wool industry dates from 1797, when John Macarthur and Reverend Samuel Marsden imported Spanish merino sheep to attempt to start a wool industry. These were used primarily for meat, rather than wool. It took almost a quarter of a century for Macarthur’s breeding program to produce enough wool to auction.
