What is aphantasia?

Aphantasia is a phenomenon in which people are unable to visualize imagery. While most people are able to conjure an image of a scene or face in their minds, people with aphantasia cannot.

Can everyone visualize things in their head?

If you ask most of the world’s population to picture a person, place, or thing, they have no problem conjuring a mental image in their mind’s eye. But for a small percentage of the population (estimates range anywhere from 1 to 5\%), visualizing or imagining images is impossible.

What is aphantasia caused by?

Aphantasia, which may affect as many as 1 in 50 people, happens when your brain’s visual cortex doesn’t work properly. Your visual cortex is the part of your brain that processes visual information from your eyes. Scientists aren’t sure what causes aphantasia.

Visualizing as you read can help to improve your critical comprehension of a text. Visualizing is seeing an essay, short story, or play come to life in your “mind’s eye.” You create mental images of events as they unfold. Visualizing will enhance the other reading strategies you are learning.

How can I make my child learn to read and write?

Compare two sounds (phonemes) in a pair of words, and practice matching the sounds to their alphabet letters. Swap letters in two-sound words to build new words. Produce and then read three-sound words by swapping out the beginning sounds to make new words in the same word family.
