Ancient Greece’s Influence on the Roman Empire Following the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greece became a center for new ideas and concepts within the Mediterranean. Years later, Greek knowledge of literature, art, architecture, and warfare were all implemented to great lengths by the Romans.

One of the most significant similarities of the Greek and Roman civilizations was their geographical locations. Both of these civilizations lived on islands of the Mediterranean Sea. Anyone that lives around the same region will have some of the same values and ways of life.

There was also a big difference in the division of social classes of both ancient Greece and ancient Rome. In Greece, the society was divided into slaves, freedmen, metics, citizens and women. Rome had slaves, freedmen, plebeians and patricians. The cities in Ancient Greece were separated by hilly countryside.

Why did the Romans borrowed Gods from the cultures they conquered?

The Romans were always trying to keep on the good side of their gods. They also borrowed new gods from the people they conquered, like the goddess Isis from Egypt and Mithras from Iran. Some emperors were declared gods too, usually after they died. They hoped this would make emperors even more powerful and respected.

From the Greeks, the Romans borrowed or copied ideas on art, literature, religion and architecture. Greek architecture influenced Roman architecture in many ways, such as in the design of domes, rounded arches and columns. The Romans also copied the Greek style in home decorations and sculptures.

Captured Greek scholars were used to tutor Roman children because they knew that the Greeks had an excellent educational system comparatively. And because Greek literature was also superior, the Romans adopted much for the Greek literature, much of which was about their gods.
