What is the difference between twelvers and Ismailis?

Twelvers share many tenets with other Shia sects, such as the belief in Imams, but the Ismaili Shias believe in a different number of Imams and, for the most part, a different path of succession regarding the Imamate. They also differ in the role and overall definition of an Imam.

Shias are the second largest denomination of Muslims in the world. Ismaili is only a part of the Shia community. Ismaili is a minority sect when compared to the Shias as they are only part of the larger sect. The shias are the followers of Shia Islam and are often called as Shiites.

The Twelvers is a branch of Shi’a Islam whose followers believe that there were twelve imams after the death of Muhammad. The 12th imam, however, has been kept alive by God and is hidden somewhere on Earth. Shi’a Muslims believe the 12th imam will one day make himself known and bring equality to all.

Holy Du’ā (archaically transliterated Doowa) is the mandatory Nizari Isma’ili prayer recited three times a day: Fajr prayer at dawn, Maghrib prayer at sundown and Isha prayer in the evening. Each Holy Du’a consists of 6 rakat, totaling 18 per day, as opposed to the 17 of Sunni and Twelver salat (namaz).

Does Ismailis go to Hajj?

There are two pilgrimages, Hajj-i-Zahiri and Hajj-i-Batini. The first is the visit to Mecca; the second, being in the presence of the Imam. The Musta’lī also maintain the practice of going to Mecca. The Druze interpret this completely metaphorically as “fleeing from devils and oppressors” and rarely go to Mecca.

Although it is viewed as a contract and not a religious sacrament, it is customary to offer prayers for happiness, prosperity, posterity and good health. Therefore, it is simply the principle of mutual consent and understanding that is the basis of marriage.
