What is the theory of entropy?

In classical physics, the entropy of a physical system is proportional to the quantity of energy no longer available to do physical work. Entropy is central to the second law of thermodynamics, which states that in an isolated system any activity increases the entropy.

What is the use of Shannon entropy?

The Shannon entropy can measure the uncertainty of a random process. Rolling element machinery without failure tends to generate a more random signal, and the machine with failure usually tends to have a more deterministic signal; i.e., the Shannon entropy will be different.

How is entropy related to information?

Entropy is the measurement of uncertainty of a random variable where what is specifically measured is what information is missing. Therefore the relationship between them is inverse. More information creates a lower measure of entropy. Less information creates a higher measure of entropy.

Is entropy same as information?

Information provides a way to quantify the amount of surprise for an event measured in bits. Entropy provides a measure of the average amount of information needed to represent an event drawn from a probability distribution for a random variable.
