Do thoughts come automatically?
As you may have guessed, automatic thoughts are the kind of negative self-talk that appears immediately, without us even being aware of forming a thought, in response to a certain stimulus. They’re often irrational and negative for our mental well-being.
Where do our automatic thoughts come from?
These are automatic thoughts. Automatic thoughts are often influenced by our view of ourselves, others, and the world. Moreover, there is an interactive relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. You can learn more about this concept (called the cognitive triangle) in this blog.

The key to identifying automatic thoughts is to look for what comes to mind when an emotion arises. Example: Aaliyah discovers on social media that one of her friends, Ricardo, had a get-together with some friends and didn’t invite her.
Are we responsible for our thoughts?
