To qualify as an ordinary pocketknife, it must have a blade no longer than 3 inches. It is unlawful to carry lethal weapons unless one has a license.

A good survival knife can have a blade length ranging anywhere between 4 inches and 8 inches long. Smaller sizes are more for pocket (EDC) knives, and more than that gets closer to a machete (You don’t want that). Personally, I am more comfortable with a 5-6 inch blade.
