An elective is a placement undertaken as part of a medical degree. The content and setting of the placement are largely decided by the student undertaking it, with some students choosing to spend it in a different country.

How do clinical rotations work?
Clinical rotations in medical school are assigned shifts at an approved healthcare site. Once assigned to a site, students deliver supervised care individually and as a team. Tasks such as patient interviews, examinations, lab data reviews, and team discussions are common practice.
Is elective compulsory?
Courses are time-limited in most universities worldwide, lasting anywhere between several weeks to several semesters. They can either be compulsory material or “elective”. An elective is usually not a required course, but there are a certain number of non-specific electives that are required for certain majors.

Do you offer electives for medical students from other schools?

Can medical students perform Epps in the UK?
Medical students are required by the Department of Health in the UK to provide evidence that they are not infected with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) before they can perform EPPs.
Are electives available in August at UCL?
Electives are not available in August. Only one elective period may be spent at UCL by any student. Students from outside the EU require a Short-Term Study Visa to enter the UK to take up a clinical elective placement.
