What happens if you dont reapply thermal paste?

6. Don’t Re-use Paste. Don’t re-use paste, and they can cause air bubbles to form. If there is a problem during the installation process and you have to remove the CPU cooler, you must clean the old thermal paste thoroughly and perform proper reapplication of the new paste.

How long until you should replace thermal paste?

How Often Should You Reapply Thermal Paste On Your GPU and CPU? If you understand why thermal paste can help your GPU or CPU cooler do its job, you shouldn’t be wondering how often should you replace thermal paste on CPU anymore. In most cases, replacing GPU thermal paste will only be necessary after 5 to 10 years.

How long does thermal paste last once applied?

For thermal paste that is still on the tube, it should last around 1-2 years. Again, I do not recommend keeping or stocking old thermal paste for future use. It is easy to buy another one and it is quite cheap.

How do you know when thermal paste needs to be replaced?

Any time you remove the cooler from a CPU (or GPU) you absolutely need to replace the thermal paste, because if you just put the cooler back on, you’re leaving air bubbles in between the cooler and processor that will make for worse thermal conductivity, resulting in worse temperatures.

What happens to thermal paste over time?

The compound can degrade with time, but more common is a phenomenon known as ‘thermal pump out’ – over time, with cycling of the CPU die from running hot to powered off and cold, the compound tends to migrate away from the centre towards the edges.

What happens if you add too much thermal paste?

Don’t put on too much thermal paste When you apply too much thermal paste, it can act like an insulator. At best case, this may make the paste ineffective, and at worst case, you may damage components via overheating.

How often should you replace thermal paste?

Thermal paste companies say to change it every 6 months, but that is biased because they want to sell more paste. Mechanical technicians say it never has to be replaced. They will repair components that are 10+ years old, and the thermal paste is still intact.

How to apply thermal paste?

1) Place a tiny drop of thermal paste to the center of the cooler base. The bead of paste should be smaller than a BB or a grain of rice. 2) Attach the heat sink to the processor. Install the heat sink with even pressure from all sides, and the bead that you placed on the surface will spread over 3) Avoid removing the heat sink after installing it. It can be difficult to check if your paste has been applied correctly. 4) Reconnect the fan to the motherboard. The CPU fan wire should be plugged in the CPU fan socket because it mostly has the PWM function which allows the computer 5) Boot the system. Check that the fan is spinning. Enter the BIOS by pressing F1 or Del key during POST.

How long thermal paste last?

Even in extreme conditions the paste between a HSF should last 6 months before drying. If kept in a tube (and sealed/cool) the thermal paste will last hundreds of times longer. In other words, no worries. Far more important is how you apply the paste and mate the heat sink to the chip.

What is a thermal paste?

Thermal paste is a very high heat conductive paste that is used between two objects (usually a heatsink and a CPU/GPU) to get better heat conduction. It fills in all those microscopic imperfections on the heatsink and CPU/GPU that can trap air in them and cause a loss in the heatsink’s performance. Air is a very poor conductor of heat.
