There is much evidence to confirm the existence of male warriors in the Viking age through burials and grave goods, however, there has been little archaeological evidence to suggest that shieldmaidens ever existed. The grave goods included, swords, arrows, 2 horses, a spear and an axe.

Did female Viking warriors exist?

Graves of female settlers containing weapons have been uncovered, but scholars do not agree how these should be interpreted. In 2017, DNA analysis confirmed that the person was female, the so-called Birka female Viking warrior, but others, including scholar of the Vikings Judith Jesch, say that conclusion is premature.

Historical problems like these have caused many scholars conclude that shieldmaidens were little more than a literary motif, perhaps devised to counter the influences of invading Christians and their notions of proper submissive female behavior. There are good arguments for this position (Lewis-Simpson, 2000, pp. 295-304).

Is there such a thing as a shieldmaiden community?

It’s hard to say. Then we have the splendid references to ‘communities’ of shieldmaidens found in the works of 12 th century Danish historian, Saxo Grammaticus, whose writing is sure to make every modern woman livid.
