Is it possible to use an external GPU on a laptop via the USB 3.0 port?
It is just a matter of changing the protocols. With a good USB driver the penalty in loss due to latency can be reduced considerably. The answer is therefore, it is possible to use an external GPU on a laptop via the USB 3.0 port but it will not be as effective as a connection via a mini PCIe.

There is a way to add a graphics card to a laptop, but it’s not for gaming purposes. Strange as it might sound, you can plug one in to a USB port. If your laptop already has a VGA, DisplayPort or HDMI output, adding a USB graphics card means you can drive a third screen: you’re not limited to two displays.
Can I connect eGPU to USB-C?
I don’t think using a type C USB port will work on an eGPU? It doesn’t support external GPUs. It must be a “Thunderbolt” port, which supports higher bandwidth as well. A thunderbolt uses 2 or 4 PCI express lanes so it can enable the access of external GPU to the processor.
Is external GPU slower?
Unfortunately, using an external GPU doesn’t give you the same performance as it would if you had the same GPU mounted internally. How much performance do you lose, then? Estimates put the loss at around 10 to 15 percent.
