Why do African accents sound similar?

Eastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, etc.) sounds generally similar (in the same way all the different “American” or “British” accents sound similar) because they were all British colonies. South Africa sounds different because of the Dutch influence.

Why are there different English accents?
