Are all actions only good because they have good results?
Consequentialism: results-based ethics Of all the things a person might do at any given moment, the morally right action is the one with the best overall consequences. Whether an act is right or wrong depends only on the results of that act. The more good consequences an act produces, the better or more right that act.
What are the benefits of consequentialism?
Consequentialism is an attractive ethical approach because it provides clear and practical guidance – at least in situations where outcomes are easy to predict. The theory is also impartial.
What is the principle of consequentialism?
Consequentialism is the view that morality is all about producing the right kinds of overall consequences. Here the phrase “overall consequences” of an action means everything the action brings about, including the action itself.
What makes an action right or wrong?
So when looking at an act we can focus on the nature of the act itself or on the consequences. We can say the act is right or wrong because it is a certain kind of act, it fits in with certain principles or rules, or we can say the act is right or wrong because it results in good or bad consequences.
Why should we perform ethically right actions?
We need to be ethical because it defines who we are individually and as a society. These are norms of behavior that everyone should follow. Some people may lie; others may not do what they say they will do; still others act irresponsibly and engage in harmful behavior.
What is wrong with Consequentialism?
A third problem with consequentialism is dealing with actual and expected consequences. It is problematic to evaluate the morality of decision based on actual consequences as well as probable consequences. A highly undesirable consequence may appear to be the result of a morally wrong decision.
