What do young adults struggle with?

These struggles can have devastating effects on the young adults and their parents. Young adults may experience a great deal of shame, problems with self-esteem, withdrawing from social connections, an unwillingness to try at anything (work, school, etc.), depression, anxiety, substance use, and even total isolation.

Across theories and research frameworks, a sequence of developmental shifts emerges, which can be organized into three overall categories:

  • Adolescence (generally defined as puberty through age 18)
  • Young adulthood (generally defined as 18 to 22 or 18 to 25)

Individuals with failure to launch syndrome have little desire to seek employment or contribute financially and tend to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. Many factors can contribute to a child’s failure to launch, including overparenting, family trauma, and mental health issues.
